Pathways

All of the area of Zagori is full of traditional stone pathways which were built many years ago in order for the villagers to be able to move around the villages. Even today its worth walking these pathways in order to imagine how the people in the old days moved around and also to enjoy the beautiful view that they offer to the visitor.

The most famous path are:

Vradeto Path

Undisputedly is one of the most beautiful paths of Epirus that’s why its worth iwalking it. Its is located in central Zagori and it connects the villages of Vradeto and Kapesovo. It was built in 1328 and you will certainly love the nature and the two bridges.

Vitsa Path

It’s a path that connects the villages of Vitsa and Koukouli. The biggest part of the path is stone paved and a part of it near Vitsa is recently rebuilt and it goes by the Vikos river and Misios Bridge.

Koukouli Path

It is an old both which connects the village of Koukouli and Kipoi two of the villages of Central Zagori. A part of the path is stone paved. There is a part in the path that goes down to Vikaki gorge and also to other paths which are not difficult to explore.

Traditional Bridges

The Zagori could definitely be named the Land Of the Bridges. It would exaggerate if we could say that everywhere you will go you will find stone bridges that blend in harmony with the landscape that surround them. Most of them are in excellent condition and the visitor can feel the aura of a different time. The times that these bridges were essential for the lives of the habitants because they helped with their everyday lives and their work. Many time as mall bell was placed under the bridges that it would warn the people if it was dangerous to pass it because of bad weather. Undoubtly you will be amazed and impressed by the architecture of the Zagorian bridges.

Kalogeriko Bridge

We are talking a traditional arched bridge which was built in 1814 and is located near the village of Kipoi, Koukouli Village which are in the central Zagori. It is one of the few arched bridges that exist this is actually that it makes it so unique. It has a characteristic architecture and its three arches are very harmonically placed and designed. At the beginning the bridge was made of stone and under the sponsorship of the monks from the Serafim Monastery it was turned in stone that’s why it was named Kalogeriko. Sometime after 1865 it was named Plakidas Bridge because it was repaired by Alexios Plakidas which is also announced in a plaque on the bridge. The bridge helped the villagers with their transportation and at their agricultural work and it is one of the most photographed bridges of Zagori. You will certainly be impressed.

Kokoris Bridge

This stone bridge with it unique arch is located between the villages of Dilofo and Kipoi in central Zagori. It was built in 1750 with money given by Moutsos Kontodimos but it was rebuilt many times. There were those who helped at the conservation of the bridge such as the miller Grigorhs Mylwnas whom after the bridge was named. The bridge is in a very good condition and there is no chance of missing it because it is on the central road of Zagori.

Kontodimos Lazaridhs Bridge

This bridge is located at Small Vikos Gorge and it was built in 1753 by Tolis Kontodimos from who it tooks its name. It is also known as Lazaridhs bridges from the theacher Kostas Lazaridis who was from Koukouli village. It is near the Central Zagori and it connects the villages Kipoi, and Koukouli. You can get to this bridge by following the stone path that leads to Koukouli Villages. It’s a walk worth taking.

Mylos Bridge

It was built in 1748 on Mpagiatikos river near the village of Kipoi in central Zagori. It is consisted of two large arches and a smaller one which is actually unusual because most of the bridges in the area are single arched. It took its name from the church mill that is located nearby. Nest this double arched bridge you will enjoy the serenity of this beautiful natural environment and you will feel like the old inhabitants which used this bridges for their everyday transportation and to get to the city of Ioannina. You will marvel this bridge because it is closely related to the regional tradition.

Misios Bridge

It is a beautiful single arch bridge which was built in 1748 by Alexis Misios. You will find the old stone path that connects the villages of Vitsa and Koukouli that are located in Cental Zagori. On the top of the bridges arch you will be able to enjoy the view of the Vikos Gorge and of the beautiful surrounding nature.

Kaber Agas Bridge

It is a really low single arched bridge with two decorative arches on the left and the right side of the bridge and is located near the village of Miliotades on Eastern Zagori near the connection point of Vardas and Zagoritiokos river. It wasn named after Kaber Agas who sponsored the construction of this bridges. This particular bridges is mostly known for its strange design and height. It’s a bridge worth seeing.

kleidonias or Voidomatis Bridge

This unique bridge with the largest arch was built in1853 and is very well maintained till today. It is located at Kleidonia village which is at the end of Vikos Gorge. It bridges the Voidomatis river from which the bridge took its second name. During the old days the habitants used this bridge to go from Western Zagori to Konitsa. The bridge is well known for its location and for its beautiful view of Voidomatis. In that area there was a vendetta between two families. There are many reasons to visit this bridge.

Tsipanis Bridge

It’s a single arched bridge which was built in 1875 on Vardas Bridge. It is located near the Miliotades Village in Eastern Zagori but its main sponsor was the Greveniti Village. It has a very tall arch which gives to the bridge a unique style. Nearby there is also an modern bridge which somehow spoils the area but nevertheless the view is magical.
